A Peterkin Story by Lucy

The Peterkin family wanted to use their new computer.  It wouldn't turn on.  An exciting circus was in town, and there was a famous magician travelling with it.  The Peterkins decided to go visit him to see if he could fix their "broken" computer.  When they got to the circus, the circus performers kept getting in their way.  Finally, they found the famous magician and went to talk to him, but he was very busy talking to the manager.  Five minutes later, the magician was finally finished talking and the Peterkins asked him to come see their computer.  He agreed.  When he arrived at their house, waved his magic wand and shouted, "Abracadabra!", but the computer still wouldn't turn on.  They paid him by giving him a new bunny for his magic act and he left.

Next, they went to see a mechanic.  He had once fixed their broken stove.  He came to their house, looked inside of the computer, but couldn't figure out what was wrong.  He used his tools to go very deep inside the computer, but when he couldn't find any problem, he put all the parts back.  He told them they should clean the screen, keep moving the mouse, and pressing keys on the keyboard.  They paid him with a wrench from the father's metal toolbox.

Then they remembered the woman from Philadelphia.  They asked her to come over and look at their computer.  When she came, she said, "Did you make sure it was plugged in?"  They hadn't.  So they plugged the power cord into the wall.  Still, the computer wouldn't turn on.  As they were telling the woman from Philadelphia, "Thank you, anyway, " she interrupted.

"Why not press the power button?"

"What?" they asked.  "But we already plugged it in!"  The woman reached over, pushed the power button and the computer turned on right away.

What would the Peterkins do without the smart woman from Philadelphia?
